I write a lot about what I eat gluten free, or my gluten free experiences, and not much about my home life. So I thought I’d share a bit of what’s going on here at our place in Denver. Earlier this Summer, we had some tuckpointing done at our house and finally repaired a pillar of bricks that had been leaning for quite a while. Since we had that repaired, the previous single pane windows we had wouldn’t go back in nor did we want them in. So, we decided it was time to pull the plug (so to speak) and finally get the sunporch renovated. Or the start of it. Our house was built in 1899, and the front sunroom was put in (we think) around the 50’s, judging from the newspaper “insulation” we found in there.
Over the 4th of July holiday week, we took the old windows apart (where we found the 1950s newspaper). Today, it was ripping out the side wall of windows and a door, tearing down the ceiling, breaking all the larger pieces in half (and I even used a saw on some – how manly!), and then it was at least five trips to the dumpster in the alley. Now, I am not a man of manual labor. I sit behind a desk all day. I grew up never having to mow the lawn at our house (we always hired some local kid to do it) but it’s not as if I’m not a hard worker. I’ve worked retail management and set stores up from nothing, installing shelving and fixtures (oh how I’d get teased using a hammer!), carrying 50 lb. boxes of books around the store, unloaded trucks and even much more. But, it’s been a while since I’ve done work like that and I am tired and sore today. Quite tired and sore.
Below are some before and during pictures. I’ll be sure to share more as we move forward on the project. Oh yeah, we did not choose the bad aqua color – that was there when the Artist bought our home 10 years ago. So yes, we’ve lived with this color for far too long. And both of us can’t wait to get the porch ceiling painted.
Here’s a picture as we were getting the pillar rebuilt – the big wall of windows in the background used to be the front windows. Those are the ones we tore down over July 4th.
Here’s a before picture.
Here’s some “during” – me working and the progress we’re making.
