Local Denver readers – go directly to your local King Sooper’s and ask them where the Udi’s gluten free products are. If they don’t have them, ask them when they will be getting them in. I’d even recommend demanding they get them in. You won’t be disappointed.
Readers outside of Denver, well, just be patient. Hopefully, you’ll see their products in your local store eventually.
First, let me apologize for not including pictures. I thought about it, but to be honest, I’m just not in the mood to go downstairs, try to get that perfect shot of a bag of cookies or a plate of cookies…but I don’t think you’ll need to see pictures if you read on.
Yesterday, I tried the Udi’s gluten free snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and white sandwich bread. And I’m sold. Hands down, their products are the bomb, or the shiz, or the haps, or whatever the hip lingo the young kids are using these days. (I’m sure it’s none of those but being so far removed from teens leaves my lingo a bit outdated.)
Let’s start with Udi’s sandwich bread. Truly, it is the best gluten free bread I’ve had. Better then any gf bread I’ve baked or bought. It’s crusty on the outside, light, airy on the inside, tastes like bread, feels like bread and after day two, I didn’t even need to toast it to make an amazing chicken club sandwich for lunch today. Honest, I don’t know if I’ll ever bake gluten free bread. Seriously.
Udi’s Snickerdoodles – light, airy, chewy. Like a “real” cookie. The only drawback for me was it had a bit too much lemon in them, but instead of being like a snickerdoodle, it made it more like a light lemon cookie which was delicous. Once I got past they were a bit more like lemon cookies, they were still wonderful. If you wanted to make these extra special, you could top them with a bit of colored confectioner sugar icing (I know, how Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee, who I can’t stand and think is a horrible “chef”. Apparently I’m not the only one who can’t stand her.)
Udi’s chocoloate chip cookies – Now, chocolate chip cookies are hard to make gluten free. Especially when so many of us grew up on Toll House cookies. Ginger Lemon Girl has a great gf chocolate chip cookie recipe, and she knows I am fan of her cookies. Udi’s has a different taste and texture, but tastes real and they go down quite easily with a tall glass of moo juice.
Udi’s cinnamon rolls – Now, of course, I am quite the fan of my cinnamon rolls. But for gluten free packaged cinnamon rolls, Udi’s helps out any craving you are having. They come four to a pack, are big and gooey, with lots of cinnamonny sugary icing on top, and taste great slightly warmed with a small pat of butter on top.
You can’t go wrong with the Udi’s gluten free products. I’m glad they are making them, and I think it’s great to be able to help support a local company.
I’ve sent some questions off to my contact at Udi’s about their gluten free products, and the company overall, so stay tuned. I know my contact is very busy, so it may be a few weeks until I get answers back but I’ll post as soon as I have them.
In the meantime, stay cool during these dog days of Summer.
Be well.

Update as of 8/7/08 – I’ve emailed my contact from Udi’s a few times, but have not received any response to my questions. Their products are outstanding, so I continue to recommend them.

Thanks for the information Steve! I checked at my King Soopers on Thursday and they don’t have them yet. I got the run around about when they will be carrying them. I practically had to beg to get the manager’s attention. And now, I think that I’ll go back everyday until they stock them!
Didn’t we recently hear that the teen lingo might have called these yummy goodies “tight”?!
I agree – they were all very good! I was really amazed that the bread had some good, airy holes throughout its texture – like a good rustic wheat bread. And the “snickerdoodle” cookies are VERY good… but I agree that they are really lemon cookies, not snickerdoodles.
GO UDI’S!!
My twenty-year old son would say “Word.” LOL Don’t think there are any Udi’s near me unfortunately. I like eating basic non-processed foods most of the time or baking treats myself occasionally, but having a place to purchase these delicious sounding treats now and then would be very nice!
I have tried 30 types of GF bread, all of which either fell apart, tasted awful, smelled awful and the texture was too weird to describe. I have literally thrown good hard earned money in the trash. I had given up on every having bread products again. It’s been 1 year since I was diagnosed. Thank you Udi! The Udi’s GF bread is WHITE, light (doesn’t feel like you’ve eaten rocks), doesn’t fall apart, smells & tastes just like good old-fashioned processed white bread. It tastes even better toasted under the broiler. The cinnamon rolls are almost as good as my mother’s were. Now, I’m becoming a carboholic again:) Make a pizza crust, Udi, please!
Yes, we say ‘word’ in our household as well.
You are not the only one who cant stand Sandra Lee, Steve. She is no chef.
My King Soopers is a bit slow on the uptake, so I’ll have to keep bugging them…I look forward to trying them out though!
I tried their bread at the Denver Vendor Fair and it was YUMMY! I hope to come up my way soon!
Nice post, Steve. I love all the information you’re sorting out for the rest of us. I also tested Udi’s stuff at the GF Vendor Fair. Good, good bread! It’s nice to have so many more options than back in the early days.
Hope all is well with you!
Melissa
I cried at King Soopers! Just seeing the Udi’s products made me cry in excitement! Yes, my husband was confused.
The udi’s cinnamon rolls and blueberry muffins are wonderful. The pizza crusts are pretty good too. I’ve had to make a limit on how many products I can try each week!
They are amazing. My mom expressed worry that they actually weren’t gluten-free. Do you ever worry that about products? I’m a bit paranoid I guess.
I agree UDI’s sandwich bread rocks. Trouble is, my King Soopers has discontinued carrying it. You can, however, have King Soopers special order it for you. Udi’s makes huge batches for King Soopers and KS distributes it (this from the office manager at Udi’s). The difficulty seems to be with individual store managers. So talk to your Kroger manager (King Soopers and City Market are Kroger stores). Or you can go straight to Denver and get some, but it sells out quickly.
Yea…. just bought the white and whole grain bread at City Market up in Dillon and I am so excited about this bread. It is the best bread I have ever eaten including non gf bread. Thanks for the new bread. I am a fan!
UDI’s can be found at Vitamin Cottage…at least in Parker. Their products are amazing. I had given up on ever eating good bread or muffins again. They do not taste GF!
[...] week, I was excited to try them. Allergic Girl had given the bread a big thumbs up and I remember Gluten-Free Steve was all hot and bothered over their [...]
We invited Udi’s to the Iowa Celiac Conference held in Fort Dodge ,Iowa and the response was wonderful. We are looking forward to the products being available at our local HyVee stores. Anyone that tasted it at the conference is stopping daily at the grocery health market and asking for it.
